Violence & Scariness

Violence ranges from extreme physical and mental exhaustion in Navy SEAL training to bloody battle scenes to sexist treatment of a female Navy recruit. In one scene, a commander begins to simulate a rape of the female recruit. Her body suffers during training, leading to "jungle rot," loss of her period, and more. SEAL trainers haze newcomers with degrading comments and nearly tortuous treatment, including simulated military exercises as well as real beatings. The exercises and a battle scene involve gunfire and explosions, imprisonment, time spent in mud and freezing water, a lack of food or rest, and more.

Positive Messages

People should not be excluded from areas, like politics or the military, based on gender or race. With the right mindset and preparation, women can achieve the same as men.

Positive Role Models

O'Neil displays courage in demanding equal treatment alongside her male peers, and perseverance in persisting through physical and mental hardships as well as against sexist, degrading, and even inhumane treatment. Other male recruits also demonstrate courage and perseverance; as a group, they show teamwork at key moments. Some military leaders and politicians engage in self-serving, corrupt, and demeaning behavior.

Diverse Representations

The main character is enrolled in an elite training program to test out gender equality in the Navy. She demands equal treatment with her male peers. The men alongside and above her don't want her there. Some engage in macho or sexist behavior, and others attempt to sabotage her success. But a supervisor admits, "She's not the problem. We are." A Black trainee sympathizes with her because his grandfather wasn't allowed to serve in World War II. He says, "You're the new 'N' word on the block." The falsified claim that she might be a lesbian results in an investigation.

She experiences lewd comments, sexist differential treatment, and an extreme beating at the hands of a commander that includes the beginning of a simulated rape and repeated blows to her head. She and her counterparts undergo acute physical and mental exhaustion in Navy SEAL training. The exercises and a battle scene involve gunfire and explosions, imprisonment, time spent in mud and freezing water, a lack of food or rest, beatings, wounds, and more. Their trainers engage in degrading and nearly sadistic hazing. But the main character and her fellow recruits demonstrate courage, perseverance, and teamwork, and she proves that with the right mindset and preparation, women can do what men can do and deserve equal opportunities. Adults smoke cigarettes and cigars and drink alcohol on multiple occasions. A couple takes a bubble bath together and kisses in a couple of scenes.
